The Wairarapa Disaster.
Mr Mills' Evidence,
(By Telegraph.—Press Association)
Dokedix, Thursday. Mr James Mills, managing director of the Union Company, was further examined to-day in connection with the Wairarapa wreck. He produced various reports, including one volating to tho occasion whon tho Wairarapa anchored twico off Banks Peninsula. The caution displayed by Captain Mcintosh in twico anchoring off Banks Peninsula was sovorely criticised by somo of tho passengers, jincluding members of Parliament. Captain Mcintosh recently suffered from influonza, and lio had been at tho lakes, but had recently reported himself quite well. Witness had a decided opinion that the anxieties of tho previous 24 hours had dullod Captain Mcintosh's judgment. Ho did not think he gavo a thought to the Wairarapa beating the Tasmania. If she had arrived later than the Tasmania lie did not think he would have troubled his head. Had sho made a record passage he did not think he would liavo takon any notice; he certainly would not havo recommended a bonus of £'2o to the captain and engineer. If ho had taken any notice it would havo been to mako enquiry as to the extra consumption of coal, Tho Mararoawas tho only boat they looked to for smart passages. Ho had no doubt that all the captains would givo evidence that they wero not blamed if thoy did not arrive to time.
