A.vimtKt; large local industry is likely to bo added very shortly to those already existing in Wellington, in the shape of a jam and preserved fruit factory, The projectors are now looking about for regular supplies of J fruit, which we are told they experience considerable difficulty in obtaining in the Colony, so much so indeed, that wo learn it is contemplated to approach the Government with a view of obtaining concessions to enable them to import from Tnsmnniil and Australia for manufacturing purposes. It seems passing strange that fruit growing is not indulged in to any large extent in this Colony. One would have thought that with our climate and soil we should have been entirely independent of our neighbours in this respect. As a mntterof fact we arc reliably informed that three fourths of thefruit consumed locally is imported, and stranger still ut good deal of it finds its way up country. Some time ago a Wellington Fruit-growing Asso-
ciation was formedaud we think laud was taken up in the Forty Milo Busk district for tho purpose of planting fruit trees. Nothing however has been beard of the project for months and wc do not bolicvo n single case of fruit lias yet found its way into the Wellington market, The Wairarapa people are certainly losing nil excellent chance for. establishing a lucrative trade and we marvel very much that no one bus turned bis attention to any considerable extent to tho industry in this district.
