_ In a letter:published, in our last issue the Rev/ A. C, Yorke gave in tho gentlest and most amiable terms imaginable the "cut direct" to the Westeyan community, and some soreness has arisen out of this. The position taken up by tho incumbent of St Matthew's is no doubt one tknt is assumed by'most clerics in tho Church of England, although there have been clergymen of broad views like tho late Canon Miller who have questioned the Christianity of such an attitude, We remember some forty years ago that Canon Miller publicly expressed his regret that the usage of the Church prevented him from exchanging pulpits with tho Rev John Angel James, a distinguished Wesleyan Minister in the same town, whom he regarded as an ideal pastor. If now-a-days clergymen are less tolerant, it is very evident that the lay feeling is a broad one, The average Colonial will make himself at home in either tho Church of England, the Presbyterian, or the Wcsloyan Church. He has probably been to St Patrick's and attended a service oven at the barracks. Church principles do not trouble him much, but lie has possibly some instinctive perception of (some higher principles than mere ''doctrinal differences. The candour and outspokenness, of the Rev A. C. Yorke's-letter are to be admired, but nevertheless we wish it had been unwritten,
