North Wairarapa Liberal Association.

Weekly Meeting.

The ordinary weekly meeting of tin; North Wairarapa Liberal Association was held on Monday evening. There was a large attendance, a number of settlers being present, A quantity of routine business was Iransaeted, which was followed by a discussion on the" liabbit Act." It was stated by one member that the Act was very simple in itself, but it was of great imporlancc to the country. Unless some such repressive measure was in force, the coimliy would very soon show a falling off in its productiveness. Voluntary efforts could not be depended upon as had been suggested by some, nor would the proposal of one occupier informin;,' against his neighbour lie cfe- ! five, as friendships and obligations would ho enforced into the question. It was impossible to keep down the rabbits on some properties which bordered on Crown Lands, over .which little or nothing was done to keep the pest down. This was a lamentable neglect on (lie part of the | department. A settler who is leasing land from the Crown, offered to prove from | papers he had brought to the meeting that he was paying nearly one half more for tho keeping down of rabbits than his rent came to, and was positive that his laud was not nearly in so bad a state as that of some others, and yet he was lined for not using sullicient measures to keep the rabbits under. The great trouble lay, in his opinion, intheunjust manner in which the Act was administered, the Inspectors possessing, under the Act, such extraordinary powers, the misapplication of which might amount to severe persecution.

ft. was resolved that a committee of five settlers, with the Secretary, be appointed to consider the Kabbit Question aud report to the ne:;t general meeting.
