Wairarapa Daily Times. [Established 1874.] MONDAY, OCTOBER 29, 1894. THE MERCIER MISSION.
" Shi: I'll nit ds toll me, liavo you seen our Mereier pass your way," is a query thathas boon recently uttered in this town where tho eminent delegate was supposed to be organising <i big public mebting. We do not know when the affair is to come olf, but we trust it will soon bocauso we want a little information about the Mereier mission of last year. In January last we republished from the Oamaru Mail, a glowing account of Mr Mercier's success in this district and wo took the liberty of questioning somo of his statements and even ventured to suggest that he made assertions down South that he would have felt some diffidence in advancing from a, Masterton platform. Three months later the annual Conference of tho New Zealand Workers' Union was held at Christchurch and we perused the report of it with some interest in order to gather further information about Mr Mercier's Wairarapa organisation. Mr Mereier lmd reported the formation of a strong branch of the Union at Masterton, anclof course we wanted to know what support lie had obtained here. A footnote to the bal-ance-sheet, however, disappointed our expectations. It ran " Gcraldine, Masterton, and Ashburton balance sheets have, not been sent in hence they do not appear -with tho others." Why, may woenquire, lias not the Masterton balance sheet been sent in P Then tho Committee of the Union reported that Mr Mercier's report of the North Island organising, had not been given in ? The Committee also applied to Mr Mereier for a copy of the paper in which it had been published, or tho date of it, but Mr Mereier did not reply to the communication. Wliy did not Mr Mereier givo tho information asked for! Had we been aware that it was needed, we could ourselves have supplied it from our own columns. Then the New Zealand Workers' Union Committee excluded Mr Mercier's report from their official manifesto, and the Conference resolved " that the liabilities incurred by Mr Mereier in his organising tonr bo struck olf," It will be seen that the annual report of the New Zealand Workers' Union gives Mr Mereier an admirable 1 opportunity of making explanations as without some commentary on his part it i&somewhafc vague. We trust therefore that Mr Mereier has not abandoned his intention of addressing a public njieeting in this town,
