One evening a month is to bo observed by the St Matthew's Club, as a '•' social evening, "when members will be at liberty to invite friends.
Forty-eight applications to be placed on the Burgess Jioll, were accepted by the Borough Council last night, somo of them from porsons on the Defaulters' List, although rates have since been paid. A legal opinion is to be taken as to whether these latter can vote at the next Mayoral election.
The following misleading telegram appears in tho Evening Pod:- "Tho Hon W. I'. Kccvcs, and Messrs Collins, W. Hutchison, Kelly, and Hogg, arc to bcinvited by the New Zealand Workers' Union and the North Wairarapa Liberal Association to address a public meeting here this week. Mr Hogg is to be presented with a testimonial at a social gathering next month." The North Wairarapa liberal Association has refused to act with the New Zealand Workers' I Union,
Among the machinery which will be exhibited at the Mastcrton Show tomorrow, will bo the Masscy-Harris Company's reaper and binder, steel cultivator etc. The Massev-Harris Binder lias a reputation as a prize winner in a large number of field trials, and will be found to be a good, durable, and satisfactory implement. The cultivator is, perhaps, one of the best implements in the market for cleaning ground and preI paring a good seed bed. Before leaving ■the district Mr Young, the Company's l representative, will give a public trial of the cultivator.
The St. Matthew's Club has once more started upon n linn footing, and if the Club was not all that could bo desired towards the latterend of last term when the members were left to themselves, failing the promised assistance of outsiders, they will in the future endeavour to regain the former confidence placed m them, and make themselycsa power in the land under the new and revised management. It is very probable that the St Matthew's Club will have their gymnastic apparatus and appliances placed iu tho , Drill Hall. A new feature of tho Club will be that no outdoor games of any description will be countenanced in the Club's rooms, such asfootball or hockey. _ On Saturday next farmers and others interested will have an opportunity of witnessing a public trial of the MasseyHnrvis steel framo cultivator, with scodboxes, etc, an indispcnsiblcclass of, implement for farmer's use, in the proper cultivation of their land. The trial will bo held on the farm of Mr E. E. Chamberlain, Upper Plain, between one pi. imdfompi., and will be conducted by the Company's cxperts.Mr J. A shocking fatality occurred at St. Kilda, Melbourne, on the night of October Uth. Through the accidental up. setting of a kerosene lamp, a woman named Ellen Jarrctt set fire to her clothes, and was burned to death beforo assistance could ho rendered her. The deceased was 62 years of age, and was tho wife of anight watchman named George Jarrett. In tho House yesterday the .Premier said that though tho Governor had kindly offered to wait till the Bills passed were ready for his signature, it would be unreasonable to ask him to do so, as tho Bills would not be ready till morning. Therefore the House would have to meet next day. A new fruit dcp&t will be opened today by Messrs J. E, Hood and Co. of Queen St. Mnstetton. Arrangements have been made foi a regular supplj of the finest fruit both locally grown and imported which will be disposed of at prices which should be appreciated by the public.
