The first of this season's wool to be delivered at the Maslortou llnilway Station, was trucked on Friday. Itwas a farmer's parcel from Te Ore Ore. A sharp frost was experienced at Mastcrton last night. Eain set in at Mastcrton on Saturday afternoon, and continued until a late hour.
Mr W. C'orrio Johnston gave an interesting address to a good congregation at the Temperance Hall last evening. All excellent portrait in oils, of Mr 0. M. Uallantyne, painted by Mr E. 0. Turner, of Masterton, is now on view at Mr W. Whitl's shop in Queen street. • Some clever artistic hand-painting of show bills, the work of Mr George Warren, the advance agent of the Mackenzie Company, may be seen on the hoardings round Masterton.
The attendance of children at St. Matthew's Sunday School'is steadily increasing. There were one hundred and fifty-seven scholars and fifteen teachers present last Sunday. A large number of natives were in town on Saturday afternoon, and made things exceedingly lively. The cause of the excitement was the leasing of about 5800 acres of the Afnori Hills at To Ore Ore, to a Masterton farmer. The roads round Masterton are now in excellent order for bicycling, and tho number of wheelmen is increasing rapidly. Every evening strings are to be seen wending their way along the Opaki lioad, which is the favourite run. Tho total value of the scheduled claims under Ik Naval and Military Settlors and Volunteers Laud Acts, computed on the ordinary scale adopted hitherto for ollicers (£200), non-commis-sioned officers (£4O), .and privates and volunteers of all ranks (£3O), amounts to £'00,985. Masterton is to be deprived of the promised visit of Pollard's Lilliputian! Operatic Company owing to the Theatre Eoyal being closed. Correspondence has been goiug on as to a suitable building, but an opera could not be staged in either tho Drill Hall or the Temperance Hall. Masterton is now the only town! of any size in the Colony without a decent Hall or Theatre, At a mcctiug of creditors in tho estate of Albert Dclaucy, late of the " Troc'adero," Wellington, the Assignee stated that the proof of debts would eventually amount to £7OO. Mr Eberle, Hie holder of tho lease, had offered to take ovor the stock at £350, aud make no claim for arrears of rent, Tho Assignee thought the estate should pay Gs or 7s in the £.
