ANGLING NOTES.
[llY 17.AAK.]
Tho past week has not been at all favourable to wielders of the rod, and large baskets have been the exception. -The fish rise vory well, but only take the insects off the top of the water, and will scarcely look at anything in the shape of artificial flies. The evenings have been far too moonlight for successful angling. Between this and my next notes better bags will be secured, more certainly if a little rain comes,
Tho warm weather which has been experienced has materially reduced the quantity of water running in the Waipoua, and the river is now, very low, and in such a condition as to make it almost "uniishable." owing to a slimy green weed and other accumulations, which cause endless annoyance to anglers,! The river will not be fit for' fishing in many parts until it has been scoured out by another "fresh,"
Several.good baskets have, been taken from the Ruamiiburiga lately, the bags ranging from ten fish downwards, most of the fish weighing about a pound and a half, with an occasional threo or four pounder.
Some of the lads about Masterton are getting expert fishermen. Perhaps the largest fish that has been secured from the Waipoua this season, was captured by " Bertie Baker last evening. Tho fish turned the scale' at four and a half pounds, and measures twenty-one inches in length. It was taken with the fly.
Mr J. Owen took eight fish with ho fly from the Ruamahunga on Monday evening last, all being in iue condition,
Anglers are reportingbetter catches lately, says tho PahiatuaflcraM, One wielder of the rod put up the record catch for this district up to the present on Saturday evening. Ho landed five'fine iish, the aggregate weight of which amounted to 12ilb. The .fish were caught in the Mauawatu river at the mouth of tho Mangahao, tho bait used king a creeper.
The following is a " true hill," and concerns a" tall" anglor not a thousand miles from Carterton: —A fisherman went fishing; he thought ho had ut head, but left his reel and line at home, then to himself he said, "My upper storey must be wrong." He raised his hat with care and did a littlescratchandgrinaiidfeltiuclined to swear. What could be done-the wind was right, tlio day v® bright, the fish were lively too. He could notfaco the journey back, until quite dark it grew; so tying all his casts iu ono, ho boldly mado a start, but hooked a log and carno to grief and with his line did part.- Ohsemr.
