Wairarapa Daily Times. [Established 1874.] MONDAY, OCTOBER 15, 1894.

SECOND EDITION

Tub member fpr Mnstcrton bus earned Hie thanks of even bis political opponents for the numerous voles which ho has secured for his electorate on the Public Works estimates. He has been indefatigable in urging upon the Government the local requirements of his constituents, ami can justly claim a very large measure of success as the results of his efforts As fur as the railway extension is concerned lie can do but little, The Government spend just what suits their convenience, quite regardless of the sums put upon the estimates. If the Government live for another four years, the line will doubtless bo completed, but had another Ministry been in power, it would have been finished long ago.

Witux the rampant Beeves first began to regulate Shop-hours and Shop-holidays we predicted that the result would bo a reduction in wages paid to shop assistants. We hear now that .this reduction has come generally into vogue iu the city of Wellington. In some establishments cheap labour ranging from twenty to thirty shillings per jveok is only employed and in others by a reduction in the number of hands employed a similar result has been brought about. Jlr Hooves' persistent efforts to assist shop assistants have re- • suited in serious loss and injury to them generally. There is already springing up a feeling of regret for the good old days when no meddling Minister interfered between masters and employes. More " sweating" now than ever is practiced in the shops of the Empire City and the business men who seem to flourish, best under the new order of things are the Chinamen.
