The Smoke Concert oE the Maslerton | , Football Club, to celebrate the winniiiu uf the Wnirarapn Chnmpionship Banner for the present season, takes place at the Club Hotel this evening. Tenders are invited for leasing nu Education llcservc of 102 acres in the Manaia Block lately in (lie possession of Mr John Montgomery. A form of lease may be seen at the Post Office. Mr J, O'Mcara's Temperance Hotel is being considerably enlarged. The night of meeting of the members of the Blue and White League, atj Oxford House, has been altered from Friday lo Wednesday in each week. The Grcytown Football Club hold their annual llall on Friday evening next, the 19th October. We remind cricket enthusiasts of the meeting to be held in the Prince of Wales Hotel nt seven o'clock this evening. ft is to bo hoped all interested in the game will attend,aud an endeavour be made to procure a suitable ground in the town. With capable management there is every chance of a strong Club being formed, and the good old sport considerably revived in our midst.

The ladies of Carterton, aud the Secretaries, Misses Lindop and Ussherin particular, arc to be congratulated upon the social success of their lato Assembly during the winter, ami il is to be hoped that Ik kindness of our Lower Valley friends will be worthily repaid by Maslerlonintis, who have partaken of their- hospitality during the last few months.'
The Ucd Star Football Club wind up the seasou by entertaining the members and friends at a dinner atul smoke eoncert in the Prince of Wales Hotel on Wednesday evenjiig next, the 17th instant. A handsome suite of bedroom furniture, made to llio order of a local resident, has just been finished and may bo seen in the showroom of Messrs lloimslow and Hoar, cabinct-makors, of Masterton. The suito comprises a haudsome wardrobe, Diiehcsse washstand,. and dressing table, easy chairs and boxottoman, etc., each article bciug perfect in every detail, and showing the highest stylo of the cabinet-maker's handicraft. The wardrobe, dressing table ami washstand, arc inadc to match in rimu inlaid with tolaraknotajid honeysuckle; with the best plate-glass mirrors, the washstand having a marble- top ai(d tjlcd back. Eacli is fitted with numerous drawers and cupboards. Mr Hoar and lus workmen are to be congratulated on having turned' out such high-class and well-finished furniture, which must,however, be seen to be fully appreciated. The suite will be on exhibition for a few days.

At Melbourne recently John Hitchio was indicted .for the manslaughter of Alfred Hellming, a Swede. Accused was a trapper, who had contracted to destroy wild dogs_ on the Tooma Station. Ho set- a spring-gun on an unfrequented mountain track, posting warning notices on thn trees in tho neighbourhood. Hellming, a swagsman, was crossing to Gippsland, and while on the wrong track got to where the gun was set. As he was unable to read lie did not take notice of the warning, and was shot in the leg, Ho dragged himself 50 yards and lay down between two logs, where he was discovered by tlie accused next day. The latter took him to his hut and obtained medical assistance, but the man died two days later. Mr Justice Stephen said he would not ask the jury to return a verdict, as if one were given lie would only inflict a nominal punishment. He therefoie discharged the prisoner, but said that at tlio same, time lie could not too strongly condemn the use of spring guns, which was illegal, and was attended with tin greatest risk.

At Iho Christclmrch Magistrate's Court, yesterday (FridayJ, John McNnmara, licensee of the City Hotel, was fined £5 and costs on a charge of employing a barmaid after 11 p,m., the conviction to be endorsed on his license. For having exposed for sale liquor during the time the house should be closed lie was lined Is and costs. A third charge of keeping his house open for the .sale of liquor to other than bmmjide travellers and lodgers, was withdrawn. Wc hear that recently the Mastcrlon Presbyterian Church has added to its Church property a valuable section of of about 11 acres in Worksop liond. The .membersand adherents of this congregation were asked by circular to contribute the money, and nearly the whole amount was subscribed. There is only about £2O or £3O of debt on this section, the market value of which is about \ £3OO. The land was bought at a low price, through the geuerosity of one of the members of this Church, who sold it at the price paid for it by him about ten or twelve years ago. A fashionable wedding was celebrated on Wednesday afternoon at the Avonside Church, Christclmrch, when Mr J, Dryden Hall, second son of Sir Joliu Hall, of Hororala, was married to Miss Helen Tiirburtou Cowlishiuv, eldest daughter of Mr W. P. Cowlishaw of Avonsidc.

A 'Frisco mail reached Masterton this morning, A runaway,'which' might; liavo resulted in liioro serious consequences, occurred m Queen Street this morning. A horse and trap belonging to the W.F.C.A., driven by Herbert Marsh, boiled from tlio firm s yard and ranintq. Queen Street. Swerving at the comer by Mr Eton's shop, the cart was capsized with Marsli underneath. Tlio horse continued to drag the cart along, which, in jolting, cleared tlio boy, who pluckily got up and caught the frightened animal, notwithstanding the fact that his left arm was broken. Several people were soon oil tho spot and lent' assistance. 'Marsh was talcen to Mr Eton's shop, and subsequently his injuries were attended to by Drßutcment, It is certainly marvellous how tho lad escaped with his life. The only damage to the cart was a broken shaft.
