SECOND EDITION Wairarapa Daily Times. [Established 1874.] THURSDAY, SEPT. 27, 1894. MARKET GARDENING.
Wk have always, maintained that English market gardeners eould beat Chinese gardeners if they only went to work in a proper manner. ' We notice that tlio local Liberal Association, which has littlo liking for the Mongolian, shares this sentiment, and talks about giving effect to it by n co-operative effort. This means a company of some kind or other, and we feel certain fcli.at a market gardening company could compete with Chinamen if it were carried out on business lines. It is easy enough to indicate what would be business lines in such an enterprise. In tlio! lirstinstancoasuflicientarea of good land near the town would be needed, land which-would be suitable for irrigation and would.not be liable to floods, Then an adequate capital, probably not less than two thousand pounds would have to bo raised to provide the siiiews of war, and if it had to be found by a Company it would be essential that its directors or provisional directors should consist of good business men, and include one or two gardening experts, A further essential condition would, of course, be a capable secretary and a competent manager. If the promoters of the present antiChinese movement see their way to carry out a market gardening enterprise on the lines we have roughly and somewhat imperfectly sketched, success would in our opinion be a certainty.. On the other hand, if strict business conditions were not adhered to in such an undertaking, failure would be inevitable, An English labourer can do more in a day than a Chinese labourer, and the English methods of horticulture produce a sweeter and more wholesome vegetable than the Mongolian. If English market gardeners wore in a position to deliver nu adequate supply of-vegetables all tho year round at the cottage door, the Chinese vendors would have to give way to them. We have always con--1 sidered that it was a want of enterprise and intelligence on the part of our settlers to allow the Chinamen to get the footing which they have obtained in tlie.cominunijty. Surely there is. something .wrong', jn a place and Englishmen arewalkingabqut with tlieijf hands in'tlieii pockets, There is An industrial.pi-oblemih'ere that is capable of '. are not sfeyto cmjtiou lop9M[^^^^^^H questic^^^^^^H^l a hcad'tca^^^^^^^^H| deferred.; '-; fl^^^^^^^^^| fhcMj^^^^^^H nortii"' :^^^^^^^^^^^^H
