Wairarapa Daily Times. [Established 1874.] MONDAY, SEPT, 24, 1894. PASTORAL SHOWS.

A few years back when certain settlers in the Wairarapa were called upon to to take sides with the rival ' local shows thoy decided to punishthe refractory associations by running a third at the Hutt. At the same time they were of the opiniou that a Hutt or Metropolitan Show would serve their own purposes as buyers and sellers of stock, better than any local exhibition, The result has been that the settlers iu question havo not realised their expectations with respect to the Hutt Show, nor have they killed either of the local shows. On the occasion wo refer to they made a sad blunder, and have been unpopular in their own district ever since they perpetrated it. We have always advocated union in Pastoral matters and we still have faith in this policy, indeed oivr belief in it is stronger than ever after witnessing the fiasco of these settlers who deliberately adopted and carried out a policy of disunion. We are of the opinion too that the settlers we refer to ought to be sensible by this tirao that there is no object to be gained by living on unneighbourly terms with the peoplo of their own district and that they should cease to bolster up a Wellington Show which is of uo practical service to this district, and which has admittedly been a failure from a metropolitan point of view. We do not object to Wellington running its own Show, but wo do not see the advantage of sonic half-dozen Wairarapa sottlcrsrunning it for Wellington, in order to spite local pastoral enterprise. There would bo little difficulty in arranging a satisfactory basis of union between the Associations which hold Shows at Carterton and Mastertou respectively, if these leading settlers would co-operate. Indeed, it would be easy to suggest a basis of amalgamation which would be acceptable from the local point of view. Themain difficultyis that some of tho largest owiiers of stock in the Wairarapa have turned their backs on their own district and aro disloyal to it. If tliey gave way the Wairarapa as a united distriotcould produce asplendidshow.'whicli Would command the respect and admiration of the Pastoral and Agricultural community tbronghoutNew Zealand,.
