Shanghai, September 21, The Chinese report they fought in single and tho Japanese in doublo column, Both fleets were under easy steam,
A shell burst in tlio King-Yuen's battery with horrible effect, All the Chin-Yuen's, big guns were disabled, after an hour and a half.
The Japanese frequently failed to break tho Chinese line, and their torpedoes were intercepted by nets, A shell set lire to the King-Yuen, and it sank when a mass of flamos The unfortunato crew were cooped up below, and perished with tho ship,
Tho Chineso torpedo boats wore little nsed.
After' tho fight had raged thrco hours tho scono on board tho ships was appalling. Thedecks and turrets were choked with dead and dying, and when the big guns worodisabled 011 both sides the fight was maintained with lighter camion and machine guns,
The ships laboured heavily, and all were using the pumps in order to keep afloat, One or two of the Chinese vessels exhausted their ammunition,
Both sides fought with groat ferocity. The Japanese manoeuvred' constantly, but tlioOlnncsevemaincd stationary.
It was impossible to help the crews of the sinking vessels as the guns in the tops aimed at torpedo boats were sweeping the wholo of the area of battle.
The Japanese allege they only lost 100 men.
