Adjourned Quarterly Meeting.
Tho adjourned quarterly meeting of tho Masterton Licensing Committee was held yesterday afternoon, Present—Messrs T. Hutchison, S.M. (Chairman), T, Chamberlain, John Hessoy, C. E, Daniell, and Alex. Walker, IIOYAL HOTKIi. Mr 0, A, Pownall, representing Mrs Emily Raynpr, said that his client recollected two mou coming to ( her hotel on a certain Sunday, but no liquor had been supplied. • Emily Rayner, on oath, said she recollected Sergeant McArdle speaking to her about some men coming from her hotel. . Witness informed! tho police that she had not served the men, andhad ordered them.away at once. This was all she knew about the matter. The Chairman said it had been represented to tho Committee that drunken men had been seon coming from the Royal Hotel on Sundays, The chargo had been satisfactorily answered iu the opinion of tho Committee The application for a permit to allow George Dennis to cany on tho Royal Hotel for ouo month iu the interests of the landlord, nntil a transfer is obtained, the present licensee s lease having expired, was made by Mr Pownall.-Tho application was granted, JtAKUJtI HOTEL, : ■ Mr Pownall, on behalf of the licensee, said that be proposed to show that the conditions under which the license, was; granted, had been carried out before'the Inspector's report, was presented. : Everything . was in good order except:a track to.tho hotel, which it was impossible to keep in order in the winter. It jiad also been stated that Mr Tucker sold mferior liquors. This his'client'came fully prepared to disprove.
William Tucker, called, said everything ordered by the Committee had

Everything wto finished by the middle of Constable Cooper inspected the hotel; MrPownail said evidence couldbe given that £2OO had been spent on improvements since tho annual meeting of the Committee. The Chairman said he could not understand tho Constable sending in suoh a report,- .. ' : -; In reply to. MrPownail Mr Tucker said that he sold the best of liquors obtaincdfrpm well known merchants. All done to ; the liquor was to'" break down " brandy and whisky. It was explained by Mr Powriall that draught spirit was supplied' at 6 ovor proof and it was necessary i to reduce it to 15 underproof before i retailing.
The Chairman said .the Committee was quite satisfied that the okrge had been satisfactorily answered, and tho Committee was of opinion, that in his report the; Constable had rather overstrained the matter, The Court was then cloared to transact certain businoss in private,
