At the Police Court this morning, be. foro his Worship the Mayor mid Mr T.' E, Price, J.P's,,a young man giving the name of James Smith, was charged with throwing stones to the danger of several persons. Accused pleaded guilty to throwing one stone. James Mould gave evidence that oir Monday evening accused was watching to hit him with stones. One stone was produced which witness said the accused had kept in his possession in the Empire Hotel for the purpose of hitting him. Accused had also thrown a stone which had ,broken a (lower pot-in Winchester's shop, The conduct of accused was rowdy in tho extreme. In reply to accused, witness said ho had given no provocation. The accused had come to his hoarding houso on the previous night, and together with his mate, attempted to pick a quarrel with any one. Mary Eobins gave corroborative evidence. Evidenco ,was also; given by Constable Stewart of tho conduct of accused, when .brought to the lock-up, A number of missiles, found in accused's pocket, were produced. Sergeant McArdlc said that stone-throwing was becoming too prevalent, Tho accused did not belong to Mastcrton, but had come from Wellington, and was not of n. desirable character. He appeared to belong to the larrikin olcment. The Bench said the practice of stone-throwing must bo put down, and accused ought to know better, Accused 'would bp fined £1 and costs, or in default sovon days' hard labour. The fact of his having the stones produced in his possession , greatly aggravated tho offence in the eyes of the Court.

At Invercargill, yesterday, T. Crowley, licensee of the Gklstono Hotel, was fined £2 aud 37s costs for supplying liquor to a drunken man, and Wilis license endorsed. The circumstances of the case were peculiar. The man supplied is extremely violent when in liquor, and uses tad language aud is generally "aterror," to hotclkccpcrs. iHo hud been in Crowley's houso twice previously, and created a disturbance. When he came in on the day named and commenced his usual outrageous behaviour, Crowley, to get rid of him, as ho was abusing the religion of some people in the bar, gave him a glass of lemonade with a spoonful of beer iu it, and got him away. Crowley admitted supplying the liquor to prevent a breach of the pence. _ Mr liawson, S.M., snid the Act was imperative, no liquor of any kind must be supplied to a drunken man, and to accept defendant's excuse would open tho door to a similar plea on future occasions,

The frequency with which young boys arc charged with theft and other offences in Wanganui, says the Herald, shows that there are a number of neglected children wlio aro allowed by their parents to roam about uncared for. These urchins never go to school themselves, and decoy oilier boys into playing truant and committing offences. They are thus a danger to tho whole community, and should be weeded out and sent to an Industrial School without delay, so that their evil influence may be curtailed and their bad example removed.
