Wairarapa Daily Times. [Established 1874.] FRIDAY, SEPT. 14, 1894. THE MUNICIPAL ELECTION.
1 UK advocates of water and drainage in Masterton. scored a point in yesterday's olection, It must not.be taken for granted that they have already won their battle, for further and perhaps harder victories must bo gained before the project can become an accomplished fact, Still, yesterday's poll shows a trend of public opinion towards water and drainage, and Masterton may bo congratulated upon being on the road, and possibly within measurable distance of the goal The contest in the West Ward was the chief centre of interest, but even here the large majority given to the publicimprovemeut candidate, was partly due to an : accidental circumstance ; still, as no ono felt sure of even a victory against a municipal champion of Mr W, Perry's calibre, the result being more than we either desired or anticipated, We respect Mr Perry as a settler who has
honestly and consistently filled the position of a Municipal Councillor since the birth of the Borough, and were it not that he is opposed to public undertakings, which we deem necessary for the advancement and progress of the town, we should certainly have supported his candidature. He is entitled to every respect
and culiSUterutmu,— have been quite satisfied if ho had been beaten by tho barest possible majority. In the East Ward, Mr T. Dixon, though beaten by a bead, can take the result of the poll with equanimity, Considering that he had a well organised opposition run-1
ning against him, he polled remarkably well. It is with regret also that, we lose his services in the Council. Had he taken a little more decided stand in tho water and drainage question, Imposition would nothavo been challenged, Messrs Wagg and Hughes now enter the Council pledged to promote certain essential public works, and we do not for one moment doubt, but.that they will fulfil the expectations of those who have supported them, and worked to secure their return, The issue in the Outer Ward is not very material, Neither of the two candidates cared to publicly pledge himself to water and drainago, and for this reason no organised effort was made' to influence the result, It is understood that Mr Yates, who came out top is not an active supporter of a water and drainage project, but that ho is prepared to give a proposal favorable consideration if ifcjcan be shown that one can bo caritel out i without unduly burdening tjioratri- i payers in his ward..
