[Bv DahociiEs,] | Orientals Red Stars. The second match this season be- [ twocn the above teams was played ; on tho Park Oval yesterday, in, the presence of a largo number of spectators, and resulted in a win for tho Stars by a narrow majority of Wo _ points, The older Club were great ; favourites for the match, and long odds wereobtainableaboutthe result which was looked upon us a certainty. ; Their play, however, did not justify tho confidence placed in them, and the Oriontals deserve credit for the way they kept them at bay. 'The match was closely contested from start to finish, and the Stars had their work cut out to avert defeat. Both teams were represcii tod by their full strength, and play was fast and merry throughout. In the lii-st spell Skinner potted a pretty goal from the iicld and in the second Thompson ran in and scored a try, making the score of the Stars seven points. Towards the finish of the ganie.Fellinglmm cleverly scored for the Orientals, the try being converted by Richards. For the winners, Jackson, Broad and Thompson wore the bestofa fast set of backs, and Stone, Wellington, Doughty and Westbrooko the most prominent in the forwards, Cargill played well on the wing and passed out to the backs in fine style. Wil-. lianis and Felliugliani were the only two who wore seen to advantage in the back division of the Orientals, but all tho forwards played a good and hard game. In this division they were quite equal to the winners and had the advantage in weight. Both on the lino out and loose play they did some dashing work, but the Stars were superior in the backs. Jlr C. Pratt made a very efficient referee, and Messrs Thompson and Casclberg acted as line umpires. MrSyd.Nicholls, of Wellington, will referee in the match Grey town v.Masterton on tho Worksop" Road Ground, to-morrow. In South Wairarapa tho Greytown men are hot favorites, and a large number of enthusiasts are coming up to witness the match, Canterbury defeated New South Wales yesterday by 11 points to I three. This makes tho seventh loss for tho visitors, and one win, totalling up 100 points being scored against them, and 63 for them during the tour. They play New Zealand to-morrow, The Red Stars have one player in their second fifteen who rejoices in the name of "Tommy Stone." It so happens that " Tommy" has an exceedingly hard head, in fact, quite as hard as his name. Yesterday his head came in contact with another "Tommy's" nose, and of course, proving much harder than the Oriontal man's proboscis, a great quantity of ctahvas lost. Tho Wellington representatives hold a practice to-morrow, and also
next Saturday in view of tho mgtchH against Wainirapa on the 29tlyyjifi Wellington is about to lose the Iservices of several of its best players. Mabcr is leaving this week to try his fortune at Coolgardie, Bennett * leaves shortly for Hawera, and Gage and Wynyavd, we understand, leave this day weok for Auckland, The members of the crack club of Dunedin, tho Kaikorai.have declined to play for Otago in the rep. matches this season.
