Brishank, September 7. The Legislative Assembly sat nil night discussing the Peaco Preservation Bill. Tho Premier said lie reBfcftted the necessity to go so far, but pHßKjMnccs Were amounting to iunraßisiiws(r, and he hoped the necessity of enforcing the provisions of the Bill would never arise. He believed the shearers had sufficient confidence in him to know that ho would not abuse power given, He blamed nobody for the crimes, and said he had found the Colony suffering from disease, which required a desperate remedy. Mr Powers said the Opposition would assist tho Government to maintain law, but the measure under discussion ho said, was the most drastic ever introduced into any Parliament. Mr Glasscy sympathised with the Premier in the present trouble, but said the squat- • focracy and financial institutions were powers beyond him, which compelled him to take a conrse which his hotter nature revolted against. Ho condemned the outrages committeed in the tho western districts, and declared that the perpetrators were no friends of the Union. It was, he thought, tho duty of all sections of the Houso to assist the Government in this matter, but he protested against tho suspension of the liberties of the people, without assigning n reason, Tho Speaker applied tho closure to tho debate, and while divisio* was being taken the labour members cried:—"lt is a brutal piece of business"."
