The Government hardly go far enough! They advocate protective duties on wheat and coal and then they affirm that such duties will not raise the local price paid for these articles; but why do they not boldly take up the position that bread and coal are not necessaries of life, becauso this contention is quito as reasonable as their argument on the effect of the proposed imposts. Of course these contemplated duties are not in accordance with Liberal principles, but then Ministers have disencumbered themselves of petty embarassments of this kind. The Seddoniau thumb rules all and decides all! Mr Seddon favours a duty on wheat and coal, therefore such a duty must be right and the full strength of the Liberal Party will bo expected to come in as a chorus to applaud it.
