THE CHEVIOT ROADS.
(Christchurch Press.) A citizen of the right colour, deeply impressod by tho roseate pictures drawn by Ministers of tho Cheviot estate, of its unbounded prosperity, its magnificent roads, fa, called tho other morning upon a slight acquaintance who was alleged to know a great deal about Cheviot. The citizen found his man wearing ruptured loather gaiters and a large estate in antediluvian mud upon his lower limbs. He carried a wellworn carter's whip in his hands and a six-inch scowl on his careworn and weather-beaten face. The citizen commenced the conversation: " Good morning!" "Mornin'!"
" You've been down to the Cheviot estate, I hear ? Just como back eh ?" "Well?"
" The roads there are in splendid condition, I boliovo ? Nothing left for the unemployed to do there, eh ?" "Put up your hands!" "Wh-a-a-tf" " Put up your bloomin' fists!" "What for?"
"What for, is it? What for! Why, I was two days tryin' with eight horses to pull .a/waggon with a two ton load out of one of them there Cheviont ruts. An' you come in here, a srailin and cool, with your hair aparted and your boots cleaned and arsk a honest, hardworkin' man about Oheviout. Chwj out q' hero, quick!"He left, .
