Mr Piraui moved his new clause providing that tho land taken should be in tho following order First, unimproved land;second, absentee laud; third, land highly improved. . Tho Minister of Lands would not accept the amendment, which would unnecessarily encumber tho Bill, because there would be no chance of giving effect to it

At 3.20 a.m. Mr Bell moved that progress be reported, urging tlmt members were at that hour physically unfit to discuss the Bill any further. This motion was lost on the voices.'

After a very long discussion Mr Pirani withdrew his propossd new clause, the Hon Mr McKenzie undertaking to look into the matter and see whether he could frame another clause to meet the case. He said tho Bill would have to be recommitted to consider clause three, and the matter could then be brought forward. Supporters of Mr Pirani's clause accepted this assurance.
