North U. South Wairarapa.
[nv DASIOCI.ES.]
This match was played at Carterton on Snlnrday Inst under very unfavourable circumstances, The ground, owing to the recent rain, was ia on awful condition, being simply a sea of mud. South Wairnrana were without the services of A. AVelcli; othenviso they had their full strength. The North were scarcely so fortunate for Owen, ltemcui, Gray, Day and Eniiuctt, wore absent from their ranks. However, with the aid of emergencies, they were able to put 11 men m tho field.
Notwithstanding tho heavy ground the gnmo was fairly fast and some excellent play was shown on both sides. Alter a very stubborn ami evenly fought contest the game ended in a draw, neither side scoviug. Tho North backs wcro rather better than their opponents, but the fine forward play of the South equalised matters. "With such a heavy ground and a slippery ball it would be unfair to go into tho merits or demerits of the respective players. Mr C. licid made an excellent referee and Messrs Baggo and Frcclh acted as touch judges.
The following teams wero chosen for a representative practice at Carterton next Saturday s~ Probables—Wriglcy, Owen, McGovern, D'Arcy, Hansen, Booth; wings; Moslem and'fully; forwards: Watson, McDonald, E, Udy, H. Udy, Bridge, Merewood, Cochrane. Emergencies— Back: Brunton,Hawkc. Forward: T. Welch and A, Welch.
Possiums,—Udy, Thompson, Brunton, Nicholson, Hudson, Hawkc, liemcni; wings—Wriglcy Moore; forwards—Waterson, Day, A. Welch, T.
Welch, Haigh, l'cavse, Olliver, Merewood.
The rep, team chosen is a very strong combination, and with about two alterations, would, I think, give general satisfaction. Tully can scarcely be said to be one of the two best wings Wnirarapa can produce; both T. Wriglcy and Merewood are, in my opinion, better men, That Tully is fast aud an honest worker, thcro can be 110 doubt, butli is
weight is greatly against him. It seems a pity ulso that such a dashiug forward as T. Welch should have been omitted from the team. In Saturday's gamchc was 0110 of the best forwards ou tho ground. However, it is a very difficult matter to please all. parties, and the Match Committee are on the whole to be congratulated on their selection, If the meu keep in good form they should give an excellent account of themselves jm the forthcoming matches,
The team includes five Mastcrton, four Stars, three Grcytown, and three Carterton, and is as follows H, WiiiGLKY.—Full back, An excellent all round man hi this position. Fine kick, good collar, nnd use# judgment. With a little more pace would be hard to beat as a full back.
J.Oivcn.—Wing three-quarter. Strong dodgy runner, good kick, takes the ball cleanly, rather indifferent tackier.
McGoveiin.—Centre three-quarter. Excellent man in this place. Good kick and collar, and passes splendidly, oughly up to date, D'Abcv.—Wing tlpw-tpinrici'. One of the oldest aud best known players in the Wnirarapa. Has represented his district in all important matches for years. Still retains his old form. Further comment would be superfluous. Booth,—Eivc-ciglitlis. Good both on attack and defence, llims am\ pusses lyith good judgment, ' ' Hansen.—H[\lf v The right mnn in tllp I'igllf tlmo. Fcotls t'he other backs jo perfection, Noted for his quick true passing, liathcr weak on defence. Mowieji.—Wing, 0110 of the flying sohool, Yovy smart ou the opposing backs, liuns and passes in good style, Tt'Li.v (wing).—A fast, honest, little man, but much too light for this position. Bather a weak spot m the team. McDonaid (forward).—A new man in the district nnd ouc of the best, Goes from start to finish and good in all departments of the game. _ | E. Udy (forward).—The jumbo of the team. Very fast notwithstanding his weight. Honest worker. 11, Udy,—Anopipr Jpvy fast mnn, Plays npich (he same game us his brother. ' Watson,—Too well knowu to require comment. One of the best forwards in the Colony. Cociuane,—A dasher of the first ivnteif. Good 011 the line, dribbles and tackles in grand style, MpEwooi).—Hard and fast nnd never olf (hp ball, A leaser to the opposing backs, '
Biiidoe,—A very young player, but has plenty of go. Improves every game.
The following will rcprcscut To Ore Ore against Whareama Jumbo, Brown, W. Knraitiana, l'utahi, Barstow, ]{cmcui, linro, Wulio; Chambers, Wuari, Tiwaka, Thompson, Kara, lianginui, Itceve. Emergencies—Pratt, Hunter, Paton, Peeti.
