Wairarapa Daily Times. [Established 1878.] SATURDAY, AUGUST 4, 1894. THE MASTERTON PASTORAL ASSOCIATION.
The Masterton Pastoral Association will have a Show this year on much the same lines as last, and bay, even in some respects, attain on this occasion, n greater measure of- success than before. Still, assuming that the reasonable expectations of its Committee are mora than satisfied, the Show cannot be made what residents in the Wairarapa North would like to see it, After several years of friendly rivalry the Show,at Masterton has been distanced by the Show at Carterton, and wo are not among those who are disposed to rest contented with the back seat which the northern Show now occupies, Nothing much caii be done this year to vary the position, but we do not see.why settlers in this neighborhood should not, with an eye to'"the future, begin to consider the causes of the comparative failure of the Masterton Show, aiid how far they may be remedied.' One obvious drawback is the site ■ used by the Masterton people. At Carterton, with greater, perspicacity, the; settlers made their ground adjoin' the railway station, whereas, in Mas. terton the blunder has been committed of putting- the : Show at an inconvenient distance from the i station. The 'Carterton people chose the best position available and' the Masterton peoplo solected one of the worst, Now;'here at once, is a;pak • pable blunder Avhicliis (mite capable.: of boingput. right..:' A; ;good |site .' mean's again of a hundred pounds R.ycario a pastoral and agricultural Show; while a bad one means- a jlbSs, ; of i hundred;. : ii ! year. It would be far better ifMasterton, for exampje, struck out a few new lines of its own while relinquishing some old ones, whichavepractically played out. There are, too, sources of strength which are very sparingly used, For example, there aro capable business men in the community who ought to be working on the Pastoral Committee, but who are .not. asked, and do not oiler to join in the work, By co-operation and intelligent revision and re-arrangement, the annual show might be made a much more pretentious and attractive gathering than it is on its present lines. We do not altogether disparage it on its present basis,'for; it is, within its present narrow limits, a financial success, but we realise that it is capable of considerable expansion if the people of Masterton would only makeup their minds to give it a lift ,-./•■;..
