We have recoived from'the Agricultural Department leaflet' No, .1, for gardeners aiid 'fruit-growers, dealing • with the, pear arid-cherry slug, better known as the leech. B After a description of the pest and its habits, the writer, Professor T. '' W. Kirk, F.L.S., gives the following remedies:— * "Thei best remedy. is hellebore, , j. Mix! 07.. of white hellebore 'powder ■ ■ in, say a quart .of boiling water, and _ let it stand for sometime. When " ready to uso it, make :up the quantity to two gallons', Two sprayings _ in a season will be sufficient if the v pest is not very bad, but it niaybo j. necessary'to give a.third, j ..Ashes, lime",- awrjfccoinmon dust are ;fpund-fetf,be'neticial. A f gdo'dobject-lessonin this particular y ™jo be seen in Wellington some [ years ago. The'.hatf'thomjhedge in front of the Parliament Buildings , was badly attacked by "leech" on 5 the'ihs'ido; but ttie side'next'the Street * —and it was a Veiy dusty street at ' that timo-waa'quite free, from the loathsome jlittle , : creatures: : being slimy,'.the dust-stuck to them and proved fatal. If no other remedy is . handy the" plants should be well J >, . dusted with some fine powder. ' ■ Mr- Palmer, the Government Pomologist for the North Island, recommends the following'mixture as _ effectual against "leech" .andall ' Other insect and fungoid pests j it | should be used.after, thofraitb'as i set, and during the early summer: 61b sulphate of oopper dissolved in ' hot water, nnd the quantity then ! made- up to 50 gallons, to which must be added 4oz. of Paris green, 4oz, of Jlollcbore-poivdeiV and 21b. of ■.** 1 quicklime.. Scald the hellebore- • I powder in, say, two quartsiof,water; 1 mix the.
