','iA(.report; from'Nbit' York, May 29th, says:—" Whon the steamer Nuw York wa6 cutting her way through a thick bank of fog on Friday night, a few miles off Sandy llook. Third Engineer liauni climbed down into the storeroom and told Chief 'Fireman H'inz that he should get up more stoam. Tho engineer sjioko in such commanding tones that tlie chief fireman got nettled, The engineer became enraged .and grabbed a twelve-foot poker handle which was. protruding from one of tho immonso furnaces, and was about to run the red hot iron through tho body of the chief lii'einan, when fireman Wagui-r threw himself upon liini from behind and bore him down, thus saving the life of Hinz, Then commenced a terrible life-and-death struggle between Wagner and the engineer. The men were on the platform from which coal is shovelled into the furnaces. Both- men are of powerful build, with muscles of steel. They gripped each other where they lay and rolled over and over, each trying hard to push or roll, the other into one of the, blazing furnacts. Wagner finally managed to get hold of his adversary's throat, and he tightened his grip until the engineer's eyes bulged from the sockets. When lie let go, Raum was almost dead. A bucketful of water was dashed into his face and ho revived sufficiently to drag himself to the elevator and be hoisted on deck. It, was necessary to lock up the men till port was reached in ordci to prevent murder.
