Herbert Williams Was charged i 'with refusing entry to tho Police i on Saturday, 7th insl., to his billiard . room, Mr Pownall appeared for dor fendant, who pleaded not guilty, j Constable Nestor, sworn, stated s that about 10 o'clock on the night of , tho 7th, on account of what he heard , outside the billiard-room, lie went to > tho front door to sec what was going i on,. He found it locked, and then I went to the side door. Knocked,but , they would not let him in, Did not [ say: who he "was. Asked to i be admitted. Someone asked who ■ was there. Witness replied, "Let mo ; in.' After, some time the door was ■ opened. He was then let-in by Paul the billiard-marker. Asked what was going ou. Defendant told witness to " clear out," and that it was a prir vate room, and witness had no right to enter. Witness remained aud was not turned out. .; ■ •, • By Mr Pownall: I told "defend ant if he put me out he would have the pleasure of going with me. : - Mr Pownall submitted that th'ore had been no offence committed. The Bench reserved decision on a pointof law raised by Mr Pownall, Herbert Williams was sworn in his own defence, and said: I remember the night of the 7th, Just before the constable came in I waß raffling a pipe. 1 heard a knock, but did not know who was tliero. Afterward I saw Constable Nestor come in: Tho front door was not locked, but 1 it was hard to open. < By the Police : The side door was : looked. The billiard marker locked it. ! I did not tell him to prevent! anyone coming in, Tho doors were ' shut on account of the raffle. I did ' not want anyone coming in to inter- i fere,... i : By the Bench: I did not know ' that the Constable was trying to get 1 iu. - Ho did; not say: anything about i being kept out.'
