SECOND EDITION Wairarapa Daily Times. [Established 1878.] THURSDAY, JULY 19, 1894. A HUNDRED YEARS' AGO.
A FiiiKxn lias lent us a reproduced copy of the London 7 lines of October 3, 1798, ami with it before us it i« easy to contrast the press of today with that of a hundred years ago. The comparison is not altogether in favour of the present time. The old London Times is certainly dear, being less than half the size of the Waiiiakai'A DaiiiT Timbh, and sold at sixpence a copy, Those were days in which journalists and printers could live and let live. It is somewhat singular that the general appearance of the London Timet of 1798 bears a family resemblance to the London Times of 1894. In a Conservative paper oven a century of publication cannot obliterate certain features. As an advertising sheet, the paper is not very strong, but there is a sprinkling of quack notices in which " pills " take the lead. Our ancestors took pills as freely as theirdegenemtc descendants and let us hope that the pills of to? day are equal to tlioso advertised in tlio last century, In the ivay of amusements a circus, a panorama, and a concert are announced. Coin certs in those days-were serious affairs, In the present caso there was no " Mr 'Enery 'Awkins" on the programme, but sodato pioces like" Young Damon wasa Shepherd Boy." One advertisement in tlio ancient paper is unique which oifers a reward of £2OO for the apprehension of' a certain gentleman who had stopped a "Post-Boy" near Farnborough. and robbed him', of several mail bags; Turning to the literary contents of the old sheet, prominence is given to Admiral Nelson's Glorious Victory over the French licet near Rosetta, nearly one half of the news columns being devoted to.its details. The " locals" are interesting! Mr Cumin, the Irish Barrister, has arrived in town, and.Mr, Pitt is not confined with the 'gout, but is seen walking iir the park in perfect good health. Then, as now therewas iui Irish difficulty, and a long column of bigprint is headed " Eebellion in Ireland." Tlio LondoiiTVwes was perhaps in the matter of headings a little more outspoken in '9B than It is now.' There is even a small space devoted to " Sport " in the paper, and an account is given pf : a.country gathering when cricket is played, a chiieso rolled down a hill, and pony iaco"ran, ft Jmatcji,'' and' 4 1 contest *where;a prize was given to J anyone J., Wiled down a liill, 'There were also ; diving and cudgelling matches, a <
donko3 r I'ftce,; a,Avrestling match and ft snok i«co, ■, The tail piece to the pnuoipa] nous page consists of a i^ eo pfj. the, vanouß robberies by • footpads and-highwaymen.
