SECOND EDITION Wairarapa Daily Times. [Established 1878.] WEDNESDAY, JULY 18, 1894. THE NORTH WAIRARAPALIBERAL ASSOCIATION.

. Tim North Wairarapa Liberal Asso- ; ciation appears to havo developed recently. When it was first inaugurated it was a sort of side show in the Liberal' camp, and did not acknowledge Mr Hogg, M.H.R., as | its patron and guide. Mr Hogg's friends soon put this right by joining the Association in considerable numbors, so that now they control it. The Association no. longer represents a section of the Liberal party, but is fairly. typical of tho party itself. Its periodical gatherings for the discussion of piiblio.questions aro of some interest and utility, and it is practically superseding for tho time being another organisation, the Knights of Labour, which, just now seems tobe hybernating,und possibly does not know quite what to think of its parent stem in America, or how far it can avow or disavow the startling developments of the brethren in Chicago, It follows, therefore, that at tho present juncture. tho North Wairarapa Liberal Association becomes tho council of tho party, and its deliberations on the parliamentary bills are advantageous from an educational point of view, although they are necessarily restricted in their scope, and havo not the privilego enjoyed by a certain local debating Society where bothsidesofaquestionarearguedout: Wo adniire tho faith whichmenibcrs of tho Association appear to'entortain in legislative reforms. Apparently everything in their eyes can be put rightby the passage of Labour Bills, and so they very properly seek to make these measures as perfect as possible. There is a whole volumo of Labour measure's now on the Statute Book,, and yet we question whether any member of the Association ennshow that any one of them is pf tlie slightest benefit to this town, Another volume is in course of preparation, and. by. the time if) is completed the condition of labour in this town will be worse than ever. Has it been,of advantage ; to Masterton that the contracting , business ■ generally has : been killed | by the Liberal party ? Atone time i there were quite'a number of thriving contractors about the town, but now people -are'.afraid to giyobut , work, and when a little lias jpi be | undertaken it is usually placed on ' terms that create discontent and ', dissatisfaction, 'Trade has fallen i off ip many directions, people who haypinoiiey nreafiflvd to ! spend it, peopJo:)yhp jp.scll prtpprtyl cannot got a.fair prico fpr'iij; apdj general discontent prevails, ; : If thef liberal Association would endeavorm

to seekthotruo causesoiE the listing depression and the tone 1 nedy for iVmuoli good might rtsiil Tho panacea 1 oftlass legislation'WbeVn taed now for more than threejyears and lias only made, matters Wo. Yet this is the only remedy tat the, members of the. Association/appear to consider efficacious. Jat the Association is in the mnf sincere and honest in its intentionfo assist in promoting tho welfare 1 labour and success: of labour'■.'iJsrests, is undoubted. Wck ourselvel ai-e extremely anxious tpseeJibfui' prosperous, for on this th/gold of the community as a who]' dopohds; but at every turn wLfind labour measures contractfe the wnges fund and; limitiif the '■ amount of work available, /jabour measures are forcing enip]j-ers to dispense with hands, ami-ifis a pity that this truth, however saoitmay bo, cannot be recognised by jcinbers of a political association like 1 the one to which we refer. , ;

STiiKxuous.oMsnvo'still being made to bnrk tliJmquiry which has been asked for in tc case of Johnson. Misleading para Aphs litis been published inthoNoi&kul 'timet nnd th' Post on the spject, and now dust is being throw jin the eyes'of the Masterton public The following telegram published four local contemporary's lust isspfrom its Welling, ton corresponded, and most people have been told Slio its Wellington correspondent ipquircsa word of explanation, i Considerable fiirpriso is expressed here tliatMr llu|tiiinu, M.H.11,, should have travelled o| oE his own district to discover gricijices against the police in Mastorton. Tic question respecting the Into coronet! inquest is exciting great interest, afl ilisgeucrallyassumcd by those who schi to know tho facts that the niiscliicjmakcrs are the same individuals who.'mve previously intercstcd thoiusclvoiiii the welfare of the Stipendiary Magistrate.

A strong jlrsoiml friendship of many yenrs s|nding, exists between IMr Hogg, JLf.fi,, and the 'lioiul of the police iu lis town, and everybody know 'til it would have teen impossible t get an enquiry into this mattor ij'jough the lnemberfor, this district. |f o one in Masterton is surprised thq} Mr Buchanan has put the question/; lit a good many are surprised to|Jienr. that the enquiry promised byi'ho Government is a mere farce, all simply amounts to the head ofpc police being asked fora phiusibt explanation. However, the matter i (unlikely to rest at this stage. All thf leading settlers in this town demnny is a fair and impartial enquiry. Tl y may not get this, but they are iijlikely to rest contented with less. The public have yet to bo put in possesion of the full facts of the-case, si'.d we may venture to affirm thatj'bcfore this affair is allowed to d|p, they will learn a good deal more ijiout them than they now know. j
