Attack on a Constable.
(By Telegraph—Press Association)' Auckuxu, Saturday. Constable Finncrty had a desperate encounter with four men al Freeman's _ Bay at 3.30 a.m. He was watching in a shop, when he heard the man outside, went out and saw a big screw-driver in one Edward McEwans's coat pocket. He seized the man, and-was attacked by the other three men with sandbags. The constable drow his revolver and threatened to shoot, whereupon his assailants ran oil. The constable secured McEwan, also a sandbag and screwdriver, McEwan has been remanded till Wednesday, Finnwty was severelymarkedint'he struggle. Auckland, Sunday. At daylight this morning, Constable Finnnerty, Acting-Detective Bailey and Chief Detective Grace arrested three men, two named Calvert and Lanier respectively, and a third man, name unknown, on a charge of being implicated in the a Hair at Daw's store on Saturday morning, and also with assaulting Constable Finncrty. McEwau, the man arrested, is said to have come lately from Sydney, and belongs to Christchurch.
