In a statement furnished to the Official Assignee as to tho causes of his bankruptcy, George William Chandler (says tho fast) formerly licensee of the Provincial Hotel, which was recently closed by the Licensing Committee, says that lie has been in business for 13yeai's. He commenced in the Foresters' Arms Hotel with a capital of £250,- and when lie sold out, after 'tj years occupancy, he had a surplus ol £350 after' paying all his debts. He then bought the Provincial Hotel for £6OO, paying £2OO in cash, and giving bills for the balance. These he paid off, aiid ho took a.,roncwal of the lease for 35 years, at £2OO a year; The business was profitable until about the expiry of the old lease, but ho had lost about £6OO during tho last twelve inontlw. Ho kept on tlio houso in hope of being able to renew tlio license and sell out, and was actually offered a large sum for the business if the license was renewed. The Licensing Committee, i however, refused tho license, without there being any complaint against cither the house or himself. As a consequence he lmd no alternative butfo file.
