CORRESPONDENCE.

[Tome Editor W.D. Times.]

Silt,—Kindly allow mo spate to suggest to our worthy Borough Councillors, the advisability of appointing a responsible engineer to draw flans and supervise any road works that may bo carried out by the Council. To provo tho necessity for this, I would advise the whole of the City Fathers to visit Hailway Bond, on which at present there is' from twenty-five to thirty per cent, nioro money being expended than is required, and really wasted, as it is more Jihrm than good. Although the original idea for improving this was undoubtedly good, the carrying out of it lias been a series of blunders, of which anyone using the road cannot help but see. In the lirst place it was commenced at least two months too late, the'wet weather causing the extra cartage to cut the road up anddomore harm tlmn two years ordinary traffic. To make this worse tho sides of the metal were ploughed up from one end of theroadlothc other (instcadof iu sections), and this allowed thosides of the ruts to give way and makoldeop holes, besides making it very bad for vehicles to pass each oilier, Tho commencement of the work wasrightcnough but the nearer they get to thepittliQ more clay is being put on, so that at present about twice as much as is noo cs . sary is being used, the sides of tho load being filled up nearly level with \U old metal. This will make it necessary fern thick coat of metal to lip put njl OTcr tho old road instead of iust tlio yuts
