Tho Grevillov Cargill case was resumed this morning! The first witness under examination jvns ,Eli Smith, representative of the; Alfyeily ton Riding on tho North Wairnmpa County Council. His evidenco p the main was corroborative of that adduced from Mr King yes Way. Ho deposed that ho had measured ' the culverts in tho two cuttings and , found them short, tie drain work was also ineffectually carried out.. He had noticed that the'timber in the embankment neartho old lagoon, in tho vicinity of tho Mangaone Bridge, was contrary to tho specifications, but was not prepared to swear that it wps not the' romains of an old'trestle bridge. Additional work had to be done to the approach of tin Mangaone bridge after tho contractus completed, and ho authorised Mr Anderson, a settler residing in the Mangaone, to carry out tho work, which was paid-for by the Council, ■Extra work was also done in the Pah Valley contract bj- Anderson and Walsh, and this too was paid for by tho Council. So far as witness was aware, n« deduction had been made from the contractors for shortening the culverts. To his mind tho work on both the oontracts had been indifferently performed, The enso will Court all day. 0, ft Bremer, County Engineer, gave his opinion that the articles did notimputo bribery and corruption to Greville, but that the work was done in ft slipshod manner. jf. G, Moore, Clork to the County Council, gavo unimportant evidence, A Anderson, a settler of Mangaone Valley, said he had repaired the approach to the Mangaone Bridge, At one end tho filling was fifteen inches too high, and at the other eighteen inches too low.
