Mr Powuall for applicant stated tho rcpnirs liad been effected on the house, Ho called the owner. Alexander McHutchon, being sworn, stated that he was the owner of tho Whakataki Hotel. Since the committee's meeting ho had had two men at work on the house, and thoy wero still working. If tho license wero granted the work would be was iron and had been repaired. The Mien 'had been working for a fortnight, but liad becuintcrruptedby badweathcr. They were going to take the top from off the parapet, and put a new top on. The house was twelve years old. He was not aware that the sitting-rooms and verandah worcout of repair. He intended to add to the house when tho present lease was up, I3y the Chairman: Had not papered tho rooms or repaired the floor of the verandah. There was no agreement between witness and applicant for 'a reuowal of lease
Mr l'ownall applied for an adjournjmcut until the 30th of June, when tho 'new license will bo required, to enable the repairs to be completed. The Chairman said it was evident that the Committee's idea of necessary repairs, and Mr McHutchoa'B wero very different,
A. J. Stewart, tho applicant, deposed that he had informed Mr McHutchon about the police report upon the house. Ho understood that tho repairs were to bo completed by the 22nd hist.; but ho did not know that it was absolutely necessary to bo up to time, He was (mite ready to do his part of the repairs, Tho Committee then considered their decision, taking about an hour and a half.
On resuming, the Chairman read a resolution to tho effect that the licenso would not be granted until tlionecessary repairs could be carried out, In order to give tho licensee time to effect these necessary _ alterations, tho. Committee would adjourn the application further until Friday the 29th inst., at 3.30 p.m. At that date it must bo proved to the satisfaction of tho Committee, on a certificate of Messrs Pcnty and l\)rdc,or Mr 6, E. Willi reference to tho above application, the Chairmau road tho resolution of the Committco which was to the effect that the law undenvhichthe Committee worked, prohibited them from altering a decision once arrived at, Nevertheless tho Committee did not wisli to bo hard on the licensee. They would not force hcrintbasalc which would be disadvantageous to her. If, therefore, at tho next meeting she proved to tho Committco that sho had been conducting the houso properly, and had not been able to sell without sacrificing her own interests, the Committee would grant her an extension of time in which to effect tho tonsfer, which must, however, be effected. Tho Committee then adjourned uutil tho 29th of June.
