Two Hotels Closed at Caversham. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) . Duxemn, Wednosday. Tho Cavershani Licensing Committee to-night refused to grant licenses to the Edinburgh Castle and Commercial Hotels in Cavershani.

Auckland, Wednesday. At a meeting of tho committoe for the forthcoming temperance mission by tho Eev, h. M, Isilt, tho secretary was instructed to write to the Premier, Minister for Justice, and Sir R, Stout, drawing attention to the remarks inado at a recent meeting of tho Invercargill Licensing Committee. The Jubilee Pioueer Assembly Knights of Labour have also passed a resolution, which is to bo forwarded to tho Minister of Justice, expressing regret at such remarks and requesting that ho will take cognisanco of them,
Loss ofßeuenue. (By Telegrapli.—Press Association.) DraKDix, Wednesday, : At the City Council to-night the Mayor brought up a report on the finances as affocted by tho result of the rocent liconsing moeting, The loss of fqes frompublicmis'and bottle licenses will be £1268. To this has to bo added the decrease in the gas supply to hotels, and the probable decrease of water rates, making a total of £1690. To this has to be added the expected deficiency in the surplus from the gas department, owing to money expended in procuring stoves, etc., which will bring up the deficit for the year to £6202,' To meet this a sixpenny rate seoms inevitable. Tho Mayor, said ho had a schomo which might probably obviate this, On bis suggestion the matter was m'. ferred to the, Finance Committee '•';
