ST, MATTHEW'S CHURCH.
1 Election of Mry. A meeting of Parishioners of St. Matthew's Masterton, was held last evening, Mr R. Brown (Clergyman's Churchwarden) in the chair. Tho Chairman explained that the new Vestry would remain in office until next July. Of the gentlemen nominated Messrs Holmes, J, L, Murray and Jackson declined to stand, and therefore only Messrs Robinson and Dr Beard were candidates at. present.
Mr W.H.Bcctham thought they ought to try and get a really good clergyman tol!Ski]> the Church together,- , It was very sad to see them without a shepherd. Tlio parish was a large one but ho should like to see it even larger villi the Waimafa as its boundary, and if they then, pulled together there would be no difficulty in supporting a really .good man, Tlio Chairman in reply to Mr Bremner said that three was the minimum number and ten the maxi-mum-for a Vestry. .•; Messrs Scale and Millington accepted nominations as Vestrymen after j some time, sovcral present declining the ollice,
Mr Holmes suggested that another election would. take place in July, and these four might cany on ■ till v then, when there would probably be '. a larger, attendance.. . Mesa's' Scale, Millington, I). R, Robinson, and l)r S. I'. Beard were then duly elected. , i! Tho Chairman said he hoped that l at. the annual general meeting to be held next month, there would be a 1 gopdaUeuJuice, and that all would . sink littlflliffcrcuccs and for the general good and the welfare of the Church pull together, and elect a strong. vesfciy ablo, to manage the Cliurch regretted that so little interest was taken in Church matters.
', Inreply to Mr W, H. Jackson the I Chaii'man stated tlint for a time, at least; the Cliuroli would remain as at present, without ut pastor, He wns afraid from, what, Archdeacon Fanconrt had said, that there was nopossibil ity of temporarily obtaining a clergyman's services. Mr WTH.Beethamsaidthcy ought tp'dd as suggested at last meeting, viz.:—canvass the district for support and when the necessaryamount had been raised, lay the fact before the. powers that be. , It was all very well for the ladies to raise money by bazaars and sales of w.ork—and they were much indebted to iliera for , what they had lie certainly was of opinion that a clergyman's stipend should.be aguaraiiteed fund, and not dependant on bazaars and sales cavort, He should,be glad to and seo wkt'lie could do amongst his friends. By an..energetic canvass.they miglifc , easjly, raise tho required Hum, and could 'then make an offort to secure' a, good clergyman. At present—as tiimgsai'o-rtlioy worolikely to lose moro members of the Church, who, not satisfied togo without a pastor. r- might join some otl/cr Beet, The Chairman Mid it only meant that the Parish would, hw to ruite -. !■■: <' A
