SECOND EDITION Wairarapa Daily Times. [Established 1878.] THURSDAY, JUNE 14, 1894. DOMESTIC HOLIDAYS.
The Ohristchuvch Prm has published nil article advocating a weekly half-holiday for domestic servants, but wo tire glad to notice that it does not advise tho passage of an act of Parliament to bring about the proposed innovation. " A domestic Servants' Half-holiday Bill" would be of comso just as reasonable as any other Labour measure which the Ministry has passed, and we may, if the Hon, W, H, P, Reeves still continues his well meant effort,to legislate labour out of tho Colony, yet see such'an net brought in. But where tho thing is to stop we do not know, '! A Mothers' Half-holiday Bill" would be Wiled as a boon by many in the community, bullion if this were conceded, who would look lifter the babies, Thoro is a general fooling thatalready we have too many legis* lativo holidays, but if more (ire to bo enacted it would be only reasonable to give tho "slavey "a show. At present sho is restricted to her "night out" and her" Sunday out," aud is not on level terms with the shop girl who enjoys a statutory klf-holiday. The drawback istliattho Legislature gives pcoplo holidays thattliey don't want. If a man needs a Saturday afternoon it gives liim a Wednesday At a time, too, perhaps when aman is eager to bo at workup that lie can make both ends meet Hie Legislature steps in and says;" Thou sljalt not work," but becomo at such und such a time ft miserable and disgusted idler. On the whole tho domestic servant is to bo congratulated upon not being victim of Legislative enactment on the half holiday mania. If she were we would probably find that John had bis hnlf holiday on Thursday .afternoon and Joahhad her half holiday onFriday afternoon and that tho fond paii> would bo unutterably miserable and unhappy in their privileges. The Government has been - move successful in finding holidays for the people so far than tlioy have been in supplying them with work. The difficulty just nowin New Zealand is not to obtain holidays but to get TOlf, Work, after all is the real blessing that is wetted | and that the domestic servant gets plenty of. ; But hard work, long hours of work are infinitely prefer* able to s enforced idleness and the real persons to bo pitied aro those who have nothing to do, It would jbo a great boon for tho cause of labour and tho interests of workers if all the labour acts now in forco : were repealed absolutely.
