jv In the Conway-casf the Master- ■ ton Hospital Trustees appear to liavo taken up the position that tho point at issue was whether the Custodian j exercised; a proper dfscfetioii in..the actionMiolrhe took.:; It<appeiired to us atlthe time that thei real question waswhethjer"the Hospital regulations themselves were adequate tomeotanemergonoyofsuDhaoharactor, and for these of course the Trastees are responsible, Saddling the affair on to Mr Williams' shoulders was no doubt one way. out of the" difficulty, but it. was not the best way,. ~,,;„■-, .', ;' .
Is April last wo commonded tho action of tho Fernridgo settlers in giving-a preference to a big strong dairy union over n small local company, and there can be no doubt that this view is a sound one. There are, however, people in this community who are disposed to believo that the N.Z. Dairy Farmers' Union is not quito big and strong enough yet for the task which it has undertaken. This opinion may or may not be true, and the correctness of it cannot yory well bo verified till the company's first bfllaip sheet appears in August next. A strong Union )S s})s the farmers -of the Fernridgo nbsQ.lntelynecdanditis necessary fdrthoir own protection that thoy should satisfy themselves that the one thoy propose to join is all that they desire MuU'equtreltto be. It would, we consider, bo a prudept sfop for the Fernridge settlers not to finally commit themselves to the Jf.Z, Union until tho August balance sheet lias appeared, flie delay of a month or two In tho erection of .a creamery is not so materiel as muting n, good start. If It be found when tho balance sheet of the N. 55. Dairy Farmers' Union is produced that the Company is strong enough to cover the Wairarapa field, it should as the first-comer bo undoubtedly supported, On ' the othor hand, if jfs resources .do not warrant an extension, pf business, it will be easy enough to ftoaj; a, Wairarapa Union strong enough to do all that is required for the daily industry inthijj district on the best possible ..terms;:; Wo dp pot suggest any. small company in this contingency, but a big tiling. It mon like Messrs Stakoy and Lowes, of Mastcrton, Buchanan and Bpoth, of. Cartorton, and Bidwill and Pharazyn, of Fflntherston, promoted! such an undertaking, and they ard tho sort of hum to do it- if called upon, one of;! tho strongest and most successful unions in. tho Colony could bo speedily 'inaugurated. ■•■ Wo do not : advocate tho formation of such a union now, i but wo suggest that'the position of! tho New Zealand Farmers' Union ' should be carefully considered; in August boioicbn- ■ sidcrod adequate to tho requirements | of tho Wftirarapafarmei'S, then abig | local union should be promoted.. ]
