FOOTBALL.

[By Damocles.]

Carterton ut, Stars.

The glorious uncertainties of football were again manifested on Satururday last,- wheu the Carterton Rivals scored a win in the match against the Bed Stars by five points to four. My warning of Friday in reference to holding Carterton players too cheap proved prophetic, and the Stars went down with live substitutes. Tlio gronnd was in a very muddy state, and. rain descended tliroughout the whole afternoon. As a result, football was out of the question, and the game consisted of a series of scrums, prospecting and mulling. Carterton fairly revelled in the slippery rnurl, and had somewhat the best of the garno nearly all through, Passing and running were out of the question, and, therefore, the Star players were all at sea, and the opposing forwards, were in splendid form. Kicking 1 hard and following uj) was the order of the day. Very seldom tlio ball was taken properly, ; usually sliding away in the opposito direction. H, Thomas secured a mark for tlio Stai-s early in the first spell, fl. Wrigley placing a pretty goal from a difficult position. After this the Stars did not seem to exert them : solves in tlio least, making no effort to score, and just keeping the play at safe distance from thoir line. This kind of half-hearted play went 011 till near the end of the second spell, when Cariertoii forwards kicking hard, tlio ball went over tlio Star line among the spectators, who certainly prevented Wriglcy from touching down. Waterson fell 011 the ball, andwas.awarded a try, amidst great excitement from the spectators. Nicholson easily placed the goal, and tlio match was won. When too late the Stars rallied, and by the only' brilliant play of the day, carried the ball the whole length of the lield to the Carterton line, where Morris was within a hair's breadth of getting over. The whistlo blew, and the game was finished, Carterton played a good-all-round game, and are not to be trilled with by any team even on a fine day, although had tlio ground been dry,the fast men of tlio Star backs would have won tlio gamo hands down, Allen, Booth, and Nicholson in the I Carterton back division played ex-! tremoly well, and niado fewer mistakes in taking the ball than their opponents, it being certainly not the Stars " day out." Merewood, Cad, and Waterson were conspicuous in the forward's, but this division as a whole is the Club's strong point, and my opinion is that the team will be well up in the senior contest when the season is over.

Not one of the Star backs did anything out of the ordinary—bar mulling—ami in this they all did their share, The forwards worked hard, but had littlo satisfaction in the greasy ball. Emmefct-, Welch, and Morris were perhaps the best, although liono were very brilliant. Mr D'Avcy nndo an excellent referee, Messrs Wilsone and Eagle acting as umpire?. Kotahitanga ut. Stirs. The above junior teams met to do battle for the first time on the Worksop Itoad Ground on Saturday kst, and as it was expected that a very even game would result, there was it. large number of spectators present. The match was played in a very friendly spirit throughout, and taking tho game all round was a real good one, tho play at times being-very fast, and some tine kicking, passing, and collaring was indulged iu by both teams. The visitors were on the ground punctual to time, but were kept waitiug by some of the Star men, who failed to rc!l up at the proper time. Kotahitanga are a line-looking team, and are a good deal heavier than the Stare, who are very light, especially in the back division—P. Galloway, W. Thompson, and Hob Jackson, three-quarters, aro exceptionally light, but lnaks up for weight by their smartness.

Falkner (captain) kicked off for Hie visitors, and sent the ball well down llio field to T. D'Arcy, who returned into touch. On the ball being thrown out, tlio play was taken to tlie centre of the field, where some scrums took place. I'alkner got the ball and made a dodgy run, but was collared, Some loose play took place, and the visitors we warded a free kick for off-side play, Tairon kieked into touch, and from the line-out the Star forwards got a fine rush on, and took the ball over the goal line, whore jßutemcut touched down, but tho try was disallowed, Falkner sent tlio ball down the field, and D'Arcy returned, A scrum took place, and from a pass, Galloway secured the bull and made a good dodgy run up the touch line and touched down behind the goal posts, but unfortunately the hall was taken back, as it was stated that lie run out, From tlio kick-out W. Thompson got the ball and mndc a lino run, taking the ball well up into the visitors' twentylives, bui lie was collared, Half time was called,

The second spell was very fast. Shortly after the kick oil, Falkner' made a long run, and passing to Danger, took tho ball close to the Star goal line, and Kotahitaiiga looked liked scoring. Hoar secured the ball mid kicked iuto touch. From the line-out Enimett pt-ssed out, and Galloway made a fiuornii down the field, but was collared, From a scrum Tairoa got the ball and kicked to the centro of the field, The Stars got a line rush on, in which Eminett, Bobiesou, Westbrooke and Dorset were conspicuous, andDorsetsecural tlifl ball anil passed. to Thompson, who was over the goal : lino like a shot, and touched down behind the posts. Galloway placed a vory neat goal, The visitors now made desperate eliorts to score, and several times took the ball into the Stars twenty-lives, but tlio ball was quickly taken out again, From a line rash'down the field, Jeffries secured the ball and making a dodgy run, scored another try for the Stars, from which Green converted a pretty goal, The visitors, nothing daunted redoubled their efforts and sonieneat passing between Danger and Falk: her took place, taking tho ball into tho ,Sfa'rs tweijty-fiv'ej, Falkper secured a try from which Kaiapqi kjckecl' a fine goal, The Stars, liad to play on the defensive after this, the visitors making things very ■ interesting, but they were equal to the occasion, Hob Jackson had a very pretty shot .tit goal, which the referee gave as a poster, Time was shortly after called. The gamo resulted in a win for the Stars by 10 points to five. For the Stars Galloway, Thompson, Jackson, Hoar, Green and D'Arcy, backs; and Wellington, Enimett, Hobieson, Jeffries) DorsetandDoughty played a rattling ; goodgww pvygue' flayed

oxceptionally-.ivell, and thereis notliing much to choose bdtween any of tlio backs. :or: forwards, ifrd I feci Confident tliat lf'they play tlio samo game nil tlu-ough. theu-cup matches, tlicy liaVe nothing to fear. For the | visitors, Falkner is undoubtedly by far the best back they have, and' Danger, Kaiapoi, Tairoa, and Chess also played a fine game. Mr W. Watson, of the Masterton Club, acted as referee, and his fairness and impartiality^^ warn! satisfaction to both .teams, Mr Clias, Matthews acted ns'liiio' umpjvo for the Stars, and Mr Pratt for Kotahitanga.

The Gi'eytown first canie to Masterton on Saturday to play To Ore Ore, but when they arrived on tlio ground-at 3.2o—they were alone, the Maoris having kicked off at tlio appointed -time' and claimed the match. Of course, Greytown will appeal to the Union, and should gain their protest, it being a most unusual proceeding to claim a match without any grace. Yisitiiif teams should always be treated with courtesy, and I am rather surprised at the stand taken by the Te Ore Ore men on Saturday;" The match will ■' probably bo ordered to at Greytown.

Masterton second indicted a severo defeat 011 the Te Ore Ore second 011 Saturday, Winning by 29 points to live. McGovern was the principal scorer, and left an excellent impression with the spectators. .Tlio victory should put sonie heart, into tlio Masterton juniors, who have been in very low water up till the present. Tlio Te Ore Ore team 'will enter a protest against the win, owing to Masterton playing McGovern, who has not been in the district fourteen days.

When.the newsnrrived in town on Saturday evening tliat the Stars had been defeated ; by Carterton, most people refused to believe it, and wero not satisfied until the team arrived home. After tho brilliant play! of the Stars ou tho previous Saturday it seemed incredible, but it will prove a lesson to the losers not to hold any team too clieaplyr—especially 011 a wet Tho Mastortoir Club, who play Cartertou next Saturday, may also take warniiig, ■■■■.■

_ . Tlio following will represent tho Stars against Greytown 011 the Oval on Saturday:—Wriglcy, Stafford, De Joux, 'Norton, Ecnieni, Hansen, Wriglcy, Wilsone, Emmett, Pearse, Rummer, Cochrane, McKillip, and Welch. Emergencies: Barlow and Osmand.

The second team to play Masterton second will be chosen this evcn« ing.

An interesting match is likely to be played shortly between tho members of Pearson's Private and tho Firo Brigade Bands. As both companies include footballers of no mean order, a closely contested match should result. A largo number of Grey town, people intend visiting Masterton on Saturday next,' to witness the Red Star-Greytown match, and it is reported that several old stagors in tho football field will be brought'into requisition for that day. Greytown will be represented by a very strong team, and if a line day the StarsiyM have another merry tiiiti^i||Mf4| On account of Otago not throwing in their lot with the N.Z, Union, Southland has thought fit to secedo from the latter body, Tho fixtures for next Saturday are as follows: Senior: Masterton r Carterton at Worksop Road ground; Greytown v Red Stars at Park Oval, ; Junior: Star B team v Kotaliitangi at Carterton; Masterton vStniA team at Masterton; Greytown v To Ore Ore at Greytown, In the senior team of the Awatm Football Club (S.l.)' tliero. are no less than five brothers named O'Dwyer. This about takes tho record for a football family.
