SECOND EDITION Wairarapa Daily Times. [Established 1878.] FRIDAY, JUNE 8, 1894. HORTICULTURAL SOCIETIES.
Thk annual mooting of theMnsterton Horticultural Society takes place to-moiiTO-and reminds us that sucli j exhibitions in this district lmve been jdragging for\i,considerable number |of years. Though tlio Masterton
Society liiir nn encouraging record for the past twelve months, we would very raucli liko to sec our district shows on a larger and wider basis. For twenty years past numerous shows on a very modest scale and with somewhat attenuated prize lists, hftve been arranged throughout the Wairarapa, at stated intervals, but eno lias been so much lik ' another that the awful monotony of them has wearied the public, and 1 people ub a rule attend them either | to sco one another, or to listen to nn extraneous attraction in the shape of a band. What we would like to sec would bo a Wairarapa Horticultural Society, with Committees in every township from Featherston to Palliatua, organising united shows on a more pretentious basis than our purely local exhibitions, We want tlio exhibits of half a dozen towns brought together into ono show ground in order to evoke a genuine and vigorous competition, It would not be necessary for such a Show to be a fixture in any ono locality, If a strong Wairarapa Society were formed it could afford to purchase suitable tents for exhibits, and tlio Shows lnight be held in rotation at different centres of population A Summer Show on a recreation ground like tlio Masterton Park Oval would be amuch more enjoyable and attractive exhibition than in a placo like the.Drill Shed, All outdoor fete, in which tho people of tlio Wairarapa generally took an active intorost would bo an enjoyable innovation, Even in the moro commodious public buildings of the Wairarapa. there is usually between exhibits and visitors an unsoemly crush, so that a detailed inspection of flowers, plants and vegetables, cannot be made without much personal inconvenience. Tlio noise, too, incidental to a ; show held in a building is always a drawback, especially when combined with undue crowding, It is quite possible that as tinies go, the members of the Masterton Horticultural Society have enough to do to hold their own and rub along on old lines; but we trust they niay give tho question of a United Wairarapa Show some consideration, if not as aii immediate expedient, yet as,one that may be fairly attempted at somo future date, There is too little intercourse betweon tho various centres of population in thia district, considering the facilities which exist for quick and easy locomotion, and any local institution which might only propose some bond of union, some common ground oil which all might meot, would do good service. If a real ..Wairarapa Horticultural Show wevo got up, and this is a thing we have never yot.had'jjorth of the Rimutaka, a thousand people from the Empire City, might upite with gome two oi' three thousand rarapa residents' in making it a eutkm ,
