Friday, The drain past thestation towards Monckton's crossings is being cleaned out and widened at last, so that the water which congregates about the station after heavy rains will' hence forth bo carried away, • The small footpath which runs from Nicol's crossing to the station would be much benefitted by a fow loads of gravel, as it is very sloppj in places and people are crying out about it,
| Last night a fire occurred at Matarawa, but it lias not yet been ascertained what damage has boon done. On dit that Monday's inquest into the late P<o of tho Club Hotel will be of a very sensational character, Watchmen are on the go here now. Last night a gentleman and his wife were awakened b'y seeing a light Hash on to their window, thinking it was a tire they jumped up only to find it was it watchman going his rounds with a bull's-eye lantern,
