FEATHERSTON NOTES.

(From Our Own Correspondent,) Wednesday, _ Just as tlicuptrniuloft the station last night it was observed that there was a great glare coming from over by Tatthcrenikan, and shortly afterwards it was seen that there was a fire over there, us it was a big blaze. Jt was at once put down to be the Tauherenikau hotel. Horses were quickly caught, and a good number of people rode over there, but were agreeably disappointed to find lliat it was (he stable and not the hotel. Mr Hiley -was away at Carterton, and did not return until it was nearly out; though when leaving Greytown he saw the glare and thought it was his house. JlrsHileyinformcdmc that everything was safe when they went in to tea, and on one of the men coming out after his meal, he noticed smoke arising from the stable over on the race-course side, All harness and fodder was got out in time, though two lons of potatoes were bund. It is only during the last few days that the stable has been donoup, preparatory to three of Mr Mian's horses coming down for training. The stable contained twelve stalls, and it and the other outbuildings were insured jn the National for £l2O, Some of the pigeons wliich used to live iu the loft were destroyed. There is no reason assigned for the fire, It is felt that somo system of nightwatchman or vigilance committee ought to be started, for at present no one can go to bed, feeling that they may wake up at any minute to find their place iu flames, The lioad Board safe tame out of the fire much better than that of the Town Jloard. Tlio books were not scorched so much, but it will 'necessitate a new minute hook. It is gratifying to know that none of Jit Bock's personal books were in the safe. It is estimated that the Iload Board if the looser by about £IOO. There wen records for years back, and statutes which had cost over two pounds, alsc all the maps and tracings. As Saturday is a bye day with tin Hunt Club, they intend having a/mqe; at Tauhcrenikau, going over Mes'sri Donald's, Mi's, Hoildcr's, Henderson's Wilkinson's, and I'harnayn's properties and returning to the'hotel, ' '
