PAHIATUA NOTES.

(From-Our Own Correspondent.) Friday.

At tho ordinary meeting of the Pahiatua Borough Council, the Mangatainoka budge and protective works was again the subject of much discussion and wrangling, and the time of the meeting was not improved , by the appearance of some ratepayers who protested against the action of the Council in spending ratepayers money in tampering with the river, and pointing out the danger that mightrcsult to property by diverting tho course of the river, One Councillor also damped the ardour of some of the amateur en- • ginoers who are anxious to send the . river over to the opposite side, by : stating that the native owners of the land on the western bank of the river, warned the Council against interfering with laud up to the edge of tho river, and stating that they should hold them liable for damage by loss of land, or land damaged by the encroachment of the river. Ratepayers are of the opinion that the money voted for the bridge will be frittered away in experimental amateur engineering works, and damage our chauce of getting a bridge, ami the general opinion outside is that we should leave the matter to the engineers appointed.
