Although the attendance at the above
sports yesterday was not so large as have been expected, between (iiX) ■HhuC3 people were on the ground. The no doubt deterred some, aiuTw larger section of the community were attracted to the football matches on the Worksop lioad Ground and the Oval. The sport all through was good, the exhibition of jumping being excellent. Several spills occurred, but no one was seriously hurt. This year the publican's booth was conspiettour by its absence, but this did not apparently interfere with anybody's enjoyment. Great credit is due to the Secretary Mr William Mclenzio, and ltis assistant Mr 11. J, Fitlon—and in fact all the officers—for the prompt manner in which the events were got off there being no tiresome wails or hitches of any kind to mar the afternoon's amusement. Excellent music was contributed at intervals by the Maslerton Municipal Fire Brigade Band, under the direction of the Bandmaster Candy. Details of the events are as follows ; TILTING IN THE KING, first prize. £3, 2nd £l, 3rd T. fl. Thompson's pair of spurs. DISMOUNTING HURDLE COMPETITION (baretacM): Competitors to jump several ffchts of hurdles dismounting (both feet to touch the ground) and remount botwen each flight First prize £2,2 nd W. Harris' breastplate valued at 20s, 3rd J, Williama' cigarette holder. Walter Buckcridge, 1 25 sees J. Eobiuson. 2 )„., A. Hughes, Harold Welch, and A.Mitchell also completed. 3 LADIES' TKOPHY, NEEDLETHUEADING COMPETITION : Horses to be nominated by ladies, Competitors to jump hurdles, dismount, lead horse to lady lady to thread needle and tic not in the cotton, and hand the same to competitor who then remounts jumps hurdles and proceeds to winning post, Open only to members of recognised Hunt Club 3. The jumps were stiff, and as some excellent horses competed, some very exciting sport was witnessed. The first of the sixteen starters to attempt the feat was Dandy, who came down lit the second hurdle. M.D., Halfcaste, Tomboy, Vogcl, Kaitapai, all baulked, Killtime, fell at the last jump, while Frisco, One Eye, and Wangaijnoana refused to jump at'all. At the end of the first round only Ballahooly, Halfmte, Kouiui, Leila, M.8., mid; Debut were left in, In the run oft JIB. Ballahooly, and Leila came to grief, the prizes being awarded to the remaining three as above slated. ■fi WIIIE JUMPING COMPETITION over three wire fences about 31t (liD high, Minimum weight 12st, First prize £5 and W, Cameron's doublo rein bridle value 20s, second, 3rd J. I. Murray's hat value 10s (Id, Thirtcci'.qf the fourteen entered took part in this contest, Dandy, War Paint, BallahoolyUiid Vogcl being adjudged of! equal merit. In the run off, Dandy, (liobinson) and Ballahooly (Hughes) tied. (Vogel (K- McKcnzic) obtaining' third prize, The tic, was decided by Dandy falling' rather unexpectedly at the last jump. This event ns usual caused ft good deal of merriment, and vas finally won by Harold Welch againsl eight other competitors.
7. OIOAR AND UMBHfiLM COMPETITION : Competitors to light cigar, open umbrella, mount horse, jump liurdlo, rido to winning post; cigar to be alight at finish, Pirst prizo £2 nnd I. Maiulel's box cigars, 2nd £l,3rd value
This was another of the amusing items on the programme, and after a close tussle was won by It, Roake.
