THE UNEMPLOYED.
Wellington Gollects i [£so0 ] {or-Relief, j At the weekly .meeting of the Benevolent Trustees yesterday afternoon, the Sub-Committee appointed to find a place of shelter for the homeless reported that the use of !'harbour shed F had been obtained I for the purpose, and that £2l had been expended on blankets and mattresses, etc. Adding meals, the outlay so far had been £46 2s 4d. A custodian had been engaged at £2 per week, Au average of 35 men nightly had been provided with shelter in the shed and meals at the Home,
The fact that tho citizens have in a few days collected nearly £soo— amount yesterday had reached £4Bo—for dealing with the unemployed difficulty is greatly to their credit. They hope for subsidies, and morally they are entitled to them. If they will only evolve a sensible schemo of employment, a work the organisers aro, we hear, earnestly engaged upon, there will be nothing left to be desired, except the co-oper-ationof tho local bodies,— v,#.
