MRS. MAYOR YATES.
She Clears the Council Room. A Regular Rumpus. (By Telegraph.—Press Association). Auckland, Tuesday, -i At a special meeting of the Oneliunga Borongh Council laßt evening about 150 or 200 spectators were present. When the meeting commenced Mrs Yates asked, the publio to withdraw. Those present would not at first leave the room, whereupon Mrs Yates left the Mayoral chair, amidst great er~ citement, and cleared the room after considerable difficulty, using personal exertions to put the more obstreperous individuals out,
This clearance was no easy task for her, and was not accomplished until she had, in putting her headoutofthe Council room window to look for the police, run the gauntlet of tho jeers of that part of the crowd she had put 1 outside.
Ihe room me cleared of oil but three pressmen, and the crowd all this time were jeering oiftside or hammering and shaking the council room door. Mrs Yates again leaving the ohair re-opened tbe door and threatened that if the orowd did not olear out ahe would send for the police. Meanwhile the two sections of councillors were wrangling amongst Lbemselves. Or Hasiie laid Cr Jackson's section waß at the toot of the trouble nod his notion was brutal. Gr Jackson retorted that if his brothercouncillors liked to lie down in the gutter and let Mrs Yateß tread upon them, be would not. Business was gone on with under great difficulties, but suddenly the gas was turned off at the meter, and the' room was left in darkness,amidst great uproar and cheering from those outside. Mrs Yates made her way to the door way, and turned on the gas, Subsequently a hot disoußsion took place, and the' Mayor applied the cloture to Gr Jnckson. After the meeting the Mayor and members of the Oounoil were subjected to a warm demonstration at the hands of the oiowd. Mrs Yateß addressed the crowd from the window. She told them that they were a disgrace to the town and to the mothers that reared them. As she left the building she was hooted and yelled at.
