Reply to the late Petition.
The following'letter from the Hon, Yf. P. Reeves, Minister of Labour* has been received by Mr A. W. Hog?, in reply to a petition from the unemployed in the Rush, which waa eont down a fow days ago by tho Member for Masterton Wellington, Alay 10th. A. W, Hoflu, Esi> M.H.R. Dear Sir,—l have the honor to acknowledge your letter of May 6th, enoloaing a petition from men out of work in your diatrict, I deeply regret that their number is so largo, and hope that it will dimmish considerably as soon as bushlelling begins in earnest. As to bringing men into the district from other parts of the Colony, I may say that it is not tbo intention of the Labour Department to bring up r»en from Ghristchnrch at present. In this matter Government will endeavour to follow tho same policy as heretofore, namely, to do jnstice to the local men and at the same time to do their best to relieve the congested labour markoU of tho latgor centres.—l have, etc,, P, Iters, "Minister of Labour.
