INQUEST.
. The inquest on Patriok Conway,: * who was found dead in his bed oa Sunday morning in ' the Universal Boardwghouse, Masterton, v was held in the, B.M. Court afternoon. A j«ii Hi q. Gray was chosen foreman, were empanelled) aud the Coroner, Mr T, Hatohison, 8.M., presided. Dr. Butement gave evidence that he was called to the Universal Boardinghouße, Masterton, o'clock : on Sunday mornibg. - From tha co»dition of the body the man must have been dead seven or eight hours. The man was apparently of about 66 years : of age, and was emaciated. The post-mortem examination showed the right lung of the man tQ be diseased. Death was due to asphyxia. Even had tho deceased received medical attendance be could not have lived. Edward Mould, proprietor of the Universal Boardinghouse, said the , deceased came iu about four o'clock • on Saturday afternoon. have anything to eat to his room 10 keakfaßt MlfafeyT Jning, and witness went up at about\ 8.80 and found him dead on the bed.' He had . apparently tried to get .up, bnt had failed. Witness immediately sent for police' and doctor. Deceased was not dressed when found dead. He made 1 no complaint on the previous evening, 1 but appeared to be ill. Saw him at ' Christmas time. He was not ill then. ' T, Long, labourer, residing at Maa- • terton, had seen the dead body, and 1 recognised it bb that ol PatriokConway, whom he had known for • twelve months or more. Believed he ' came from north of Ireland, but '■ kni-w nothing else about him. ' Sergeant MoArdle gave evidence of ' finding a letter in the poclot of the deceased, recommending him to the oare of Dr. Hoaking for admission to • tho hospital, I'hia letter was dated ' May i2t,h. The letter was not, pre- " sented.
. i, Engel, manager of the Occidental Hotd, paid deceased came and asked for a bed on Saturday^stating that he intended to go to th<r hospital on Sunday. He was Si a very weak condition. -WtiiftKs unable to put him up, and told him to go to Mr Mould's. If unsuccessful there witness promised to give him a shakedown. Asked why he did not go to the hospital at once deceased said ha had been up there, but they said thej could not take him in until two o'clock on Sunday. Witness believed deceased went up on Saturday to the Hospital directly he arrived, A. Falls, expressman, said he had taken deceased to the hospital on Saturday. Constable foestor gave evidence that the deceased came to Eketahuna from Palmerston as a swagger, and had been in Eketahwu for a few days,
The Coroner said tho refusal to admit the deceased to the hospital called for some explanation, but doubtless there was sotueexplanation. The jury, after a few minutes consideration, returned a verdict in accordance, with the medical evidence
