PAHIATUA NOTES.
(From Our Own Correspondent) When passing through tho snug littlo aotilement of Ballance recent'y after an itbsenco of fix months I was much struck ivith tho growth of tho • iwnsnip and improvements to road, etc. Sevornl substantial res'dences havo been erected tl' : s teason, and the road all through the township—which last season was scarwly negotiable for wheels-Is now well metalled, and as firm as any in this dist.'ict,
Nearly all tho settlers are suppliers to the Ballance Factory, and ono and all appear to be In a prosperous condition, and povorly or depression is quito un known in tho locality. Amongst other properties I visited was that of Mr Croad, who has recently added to his dairy farm a. large and substantial cow shed and loft, with bail accommodation for 34 cons.
Tho district is also receiving some at-1 tention from the Pahiatna County Council, who are greatly improving the l'almerston North Eoad by widening it considerably up to the foot of the Range, and are making a road deviation where "the road branches off from Ballanca, which, when limahed, will be a great improvement upon the old road, having an easier grade, besides avoiding a nasty creek, which has always been a sourco ot danger and difficulty to traffic. They have also replaced the original small and awkward cago over tlio Mangahao rlyer by one much more roomy and substantial. Only last week a mob of SCOO sheep were brought from Hawke's Bay and thence through Ballance and over the rango for a settler In the Manawatu district.
A long felt want in the shapo ol paddock and houso accommodation on the summit of tho range will, I understand, shortly be supplied by a Pahtatua settler; who owns a section near the summit and intonds making provision for accommodating travellers with Btock, which should prove a sourco of profit to the promoter and a boon to travellers. Mr W. Corbett, who has only jost recovered from severe injuries, the result of his horse and trap falling over the oliff, narrowly escaped another serious accident on Wednesday, while driving with Mrs Corbett into Pahiatua, Tho huisa took fright at some object and bolted, overturning tho vehicle. Both occupants woro thrown out with great violence, but fortunately—with tho exception of a few bruises—camo off withoVHbjiMfe- -
