Some exception is being taken as to the manner in which the Mastefton Lioenaing Committee is supposed to be entering upon-its duties, and it has been referred to as an amateur detective force. Whether this suggestion emanates from the publicans or their advocates we know not, but of one thing we are sure, and this is that licensed houses must not in.the future as they have in the past, rely on legaj orait and subtlety tp save tbem from tbe consequences o! systematic evasions of thelaw. Their sheet anohot 1 must he " oharaoter and conduct," and if they, have the good sense to depend on this, they should invite, instead pf. repelling inspection, from ~ whatever quartet it may come. - The Wellington publicans are recognising this truth, and acting opdn it j but in this district we do not think that the 'Licensed Viotualiere quite recognise that the lineß on which |hoir business should be conducted
nave altered, and that very different! conditioDß will prevail in iho future to those they have been aooustomed to in the past, The question now iswhelhr licensed h0u363 should be sL-ictlv condueled or swept awav. Ahu Licensing Committee would mean the suppression of all licenses.
