(By Telegraph.—Prißji.3 Association), CnwsTcuunoH, May 1, A publio meeting to consider tho unemployed question was held tonight, There was a good attendance, The Mayor presided. Messrs G. TV*. Russell and W. W. Tanner,M.H.R.'s, and tho Bishop of Clnistchurcb, were present. It was resolved to ask the Government to bring the allotment system into operation in the vicinity of the principal towns; that ono ov more State farms should be established in Canterbury, to make an appeal to the public and raise funds to find work for tho more ndvancod in years of the onemployed in beautifying and improving the city and environs, and to call on the Government to introduce a Lands for Settlement Bill providing for compulsory repurchase, Mr Collins, M.G.R,, speaking to the motion regarding the allotment system, fnid it was simply dangling i impossibilities before the unemployed, Tho Premier has written to the Mayor of Ohrislcliurch, explaining the position taken up by tbe Government with regard to tbe unemployed.
